Quick thought on weather; masochists that we are in the UK I have to say that the wall-to-wall coverage in today’s press beating up BAA for not keeping two runway Heathrow open (single runway Gatwick no longer owned by BAA was closed too for much of the last two days as well!) is excessive.
We love to say that we are not good as dealing with such things in the UK. However the UK airports use best practice from around the world re snow clearance and BAA were prepared with having investing in snow clearing equipment and ten snow ploughs at Heathrow. Real issue is that other hub airports like Heathrow have four or five runways to Heathrow’s two. So they have much more capacity and slack in their slots and so can cope better and just clear one and then another and another and gradually build up. May be Heathrow should have a third runway afterall….. just a thought
